Faceted Stones Without Prongs: An Unexpected Introduction
Class Description
We are delighted to be welcoming Jim Dailing to the studio for an expanded and innovative introduction to setting faceted stones without using prongs!
Jim is bringing us uniquely accessible twists on traditional methods that don’t use expensive setting tools, microscopes, or even gravers! Over the course of five days, we’ll fabricate our own heavy sterling silver bands and go deep in understanding essential considerations when working with faceted stones. We explore surface setting options including bead setting, pave, and flush setting, and discuss when and how to use them to the best advantage.
We’ll finish up with fabricating and fusing a structural tapered bezel and learning how to properly bezel set a faceted stone. And as an added bonus, workshop registration includes a “Gem Talk” evening with Jim, as he gives us a good overview of types of gems, their characteristics, common cuts, and other essential information about working with and choosing faceted gems.
Prerequisites
his is an intermediate class, and you’ll need to be proficient in basic metalsmithing skills such as sawing, filing, and soldering. More advanced students are encouraged to bring personal projects into which they would like to incorporate faceted stones as well as any faceted gems that they would like to set, time permitting.
